The ‘Peak Performance Zone’

To be successful in motorsport one needs to perform exceptionally in order to become a professional driver and this level of performance resides in the area known to sports psychologists as the ‘Zone’.

The Zone is not just reserved for racing drivers, it is also experienced by athletes and top sportspeople during periods of exceptional performance.  It is a state of hyper concentration exemplified by the following quotation from Ayrton Senna following qualifying for the 1988 Monaco Grand Prix.

"I was already on pole and I just kept going. Suddenly I was nearly two seconds faster than anybody else, including my team mate with the same car. And suddenly I realised that I was no longer driving the car consciously. I was driving it by a kind of instinct, only I was in a different dimension. It was like I was in a tunnel. Not only the tunnel under the hotel but the whole circuit was a tunnel. I was just going and going, more and more and more and more. I was way over the limit but still able to find even more."

The sole objective of iZone training is to help drivers understand and access their own Peak Performance Zone. To achieve this we focus on select areas from the following:

  • iZone ‘Vision Method’
  • Visualisation skills
  • Mind conditioning (developing single pointed focus and concentration)
  • Turning pressure into performance
  • Ongoing self analysis and skill development
  • Utilizing and programming mental keywords
  • The accumulation of marginal gains
  • Creating detailed ‘Driving Plans’
  • Detailed planning and record keeping
  • Directing intention and attention into performance
  • Productive and non productive thinking
  • Enjoyment
  • Goal setting and strategy
  • Maintaining focus on personal performance
  • Understanding and management of belief system
  • Mental tenacity
